About length units

Common length units

Centimeter (cm)
One hundredth of a meter. The friendliest measure for everyday objects — phones, pencils, fingertips. The metric world’s default for human-scale things.
Meter (m)
The SI base unit of length, originally defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole. Today it’s pegged to the speed of light.
Inch (in)
One twelfth of a foot, or exactly 2.54 cm. Still the standard for screens, lumber, and shipping in the United States.
Foot (ft)
12 inches, or 30.48 cm. Used for human height, ceiling heights, and most US construction.
Kilometer (km)
1,000 meters. The metric road-trip unit — everywhere except the US, UK, and Liberia.
Mile (mi)
5,280 feet, or 1.609 km. The dominant unit on US and UK road signs and odometers.

Metric vs imperial — the short version

The metric system uses powers of ten: a kilometer is 1,000 meters, a centimeter is one hundredth. Conversions are mental math. The imperial system uses historical factors: 12 inches to the foot, 3 feet to the yard, 1,760 yards to the mile. The math is harder, but the units are tuned to body-scale things — a foot is roughly a foot, an inch is roughly a thumb-width.

Frequently asked

How many inches are in a centimeter?
One centimeter equals 0.3937 inches. Conversely, one inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters.
What is the easiest way to estimate cm to inches?
Divide the number of centimeters by 2.5. It’s about 1% off but close enough for clothing or rough measuring.
Is a meter longer than a yard?
Yes, slightly. One meter is about 1.094 yards, or 3.28 feet.
